Player of the Month - Chris Marshall:
Our Player of the Month award for February 2022 is our 8th monthly award awarded, with Chris Marshall winning the player vote at the club - with the club's Number 13 winning the award for the second time during the 2021/22 season.
The club played just 4 matches across both Saturday & Sunday over the course of the month, with multiple storms and poor weather limiting the squad to two weekends of playable football, which is always the way during February since we started the club in 2019.
Our first outing saw the team take a bare 11 squad of players to our EBFL Presidents Cup Last 16 outing away against Division One leaders, Harts of Bracknell, who were unbeaten in their league on February 5th 2022. Marshall played in central defence for the team on the day and alongside Vincent van Lembergen put in solid shifts on the day, with Marshall producing the standout moment of the match right at the death of the game. Bracknell scored a 92nd minute equaliser to take the game to 2-2, with the threat of extra-time looming. Directly after their goal, we won a corner within seconds, sent the cavalry up, with Marshall prodding home the winner with virtually the last kick of the game, sending the team into an elated state and the quarter-finals!
The following day on February 6th, the team ran out comfortable 8-0 winners away against Whitley Wood FC in RDSL Division 4, with Marshall picking up the Man of the Match on the day for a composed performance in the middle of the park, with Chris picking up an assist on the day too as well as a clean sheet for the team.
The final game of the month saw Marshall again playing in the heart of defence against Give Back FC Reserves in a 1-1 draw on February 13th 2022, putting in another good showing as the team were made to rue on missed chances in a crucial league outing.
Club Chairman, Sam Austin, presented Marshall with the award after the team's 4-0 victory over Barton Rovers in RDSL Division 4 on Sunday 20th March 2022.
Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:
"The wet and windy season can be frustrating, limiting the squad to a handful of outings over the month, with the team in some big league and cup games across both days. Across those games, Chris was a solid performer in the 3 games that he featured in, scoring an unbelievably crucial winner away at Bracknell in the Presidents Cup, and was a strong performer against Give Back and Whitley Wood too on Sunday's.
Thank you to Chris and the squad on getting through a challenging month which brought several storms and uncertain game days around, as we battled the elements on and off the pitch in some good games. Let's hope we can build up to an interesting end of the season, and hopefully be in the hat to potentially compete for some silverware!"
