Match Report:

The Train's encounter against Eton Wick was our 3rd fixture of the 2024/25 season in the East Berkshire Football League, with the team competing in EBFL Division One. Last season, the Train drew both league matches in RDSL Division 3, with a 2-2 draw at home, followed by a 3-3 draw away from home.

A slow start by the team in our new Gold away tops saw Burghfield put a sting into the game with a brace of goals within two minutes. With 9 minutes on the clock, from a corner kick, Burghfield won a couple of headers before a third was nodded home into the far-right corner of the goal, before from the restart a minute later their left winger was freed inside the penalty area on the left, firing into the roof of the net to double the visitors lead.

The team finally grow into the game and found a route through to go on the 27th minute when we moved the ball to the left of the pitch with Ilyas Abdulwahab squaring the ball to Phil Newport in a central position from 25-yards-out, who cushioned a side-foot shot from range to become the first player to score 100 competitive goals for the team. The team then had an opportunity to equalise just before half-time, though when played through on goal, Nadim Gharabli was unable to find his effort on target.

With the game going in 2-1 at half-time, an error at the back led to Burghfield extending their lead to 3-1 during the 59th minute when playing out from the back saw us get robbed, and a block to win the ball back looped over Robert Austin in goal and into the net to restore Burghfield's 2-goal lead.

It didn't take long to get back into the game again, this time winning a corner in the 62nd minute, which Nick Parfitt-Bowers delivered excellently to the head of Mitchell Saunders, to put the game back at 3-2, though Burghfield then added a 4th when their right winger scored a lovely goal at the edge of the box when he controlled the ball on his knee, before firing a cushioned volley into the far corner of the goal.

With the Train holding most the possession and having been denied a clear penalty for handball, as well as Padraig Gorman hitting the post when played through inside the penalty area, Parfitt-Bowers won a free-kick on the left wing during the 88th minute for the team and then dispatched the set-piece into the back of the net to score the game's 7th goal. Despite more pressure from the team to equalise, Burghfield held on for a deserved win on opening day.

Next up for the Train, we continue our campaign with a first outing in East Berkshire Football League's Division One with a home tie against Real Saracens FC at Waingels College on Saturday 14th September 2024!

Thoughts from Club Secretary, Robert Austin:

"A new starting on Sunday's and another open and competitive game of football down at Calcot, but just not our result on the day against a well organised Burghfield side that punished our slow start and every mistake.

We allowed Burghfield to take control of the game early on with our team cold out of the gates, though as we warmed up into the match, we held the majority of possession and had ample chances and opportunities to put the ball in the net, though we didn't have much luck on the day, which drew a level of frustration. We largely had control of the game and really tried to get back into the encounter, moved the ball well, it was just one of them days where we struggled with the final ball or chance. But credit to Burghfield, they were solid and organised and really did well to get the points.

To my players, let's keep our heads up and move on quickly so we can get into second and third gears for a better day at the office next time out! Best of luck to Burghfield until the reverse game of the season too!"
